“Chat with your PDF” tools are easy to try and easy to over-trust. A fluent answer is not the same as a correct one. The useful question is not “can the AI answer?” but “can I check the answer in seconds?” This guide shows how to work that way.
Why citations matter
Language models can produce confident answers that are not in your documents, or that mix up two similar figures. A citation that points to a file and page lets you confirm the answer, or catch the mistake, before you use it.
Good citations are:
- specific: the file and page, not just “your documents”;
- openable: one click to the passage, not a search;
- separate from web sources, so you always know whether a claim came from your files or the internet.
How to chat with documents in HussleBook
- Create a project for the topic, client or piece of work, and upload its documents (PDFs or images).
- Let processing finish. A vision-language model reads every page, including tables and scans, and turns it into structured content.
- Choose the scope of the conversation: a single file, a folder, a project, or your whole library. A narrower scope gives more focused answers.
- Ask your question. Answers include document citations down to the page.
- Open the citation to see the source page and highlighted passage, and read the surrounding text before relying on the answer.
- Add web context when you need it. When web research is enabled, web-backed claims link to the original webpages and stay clearly separate from document references.
Questions that work well
- “What changed in gross margin between Q2 and Q3?”
- “List every payment term mentioned across these contracts.”
- “Which invoices are from this supplier, and what is their total?”
- “Where does the report mention a delay, and what reason does it give?”
Specific questions with names, periods or terms get better answers than broad ones like “summarise everything”.
Checking harder claims
For important answers, HussleBook’s Deep Trace can check claims against the uploaded document text and surface conflicts, for example when two documents state different figures.
Common questions
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Pages are read as images by a vision-language model, so scans are processed like any other page.
Can I get the underlying data out, not just answers?
Yes. Download a ready document’s structured JSON from Projects, or use schema extraction to export specific fields as Excel or JSON.
